NYC Top Comedy Choices for Saturday 3/5/16

March 5, 2016

Gary Busey's One-Man HamletCharismatic and hilarious rising star David Carl transforms into Gary Busey—and portrays child-like Busey doing a one-man version of the psychologically complex masterpiece Hamlet. The result is consistently inventive, joyful, and laugh-out-loud funny. This was my second favorite show—out of 196—at the 2014 FringeNYC, went on to further acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and is one of the funniest shows in New York, period. David is reviving his show for a run through this summer at The PIT Loft, starting tonight. If you haven’t seen GBOMH, don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to do so. And if you have, share it with a loved one who’s been deprived of GBOMH: Gary Busey’s One-Man Hamlet (As Performed by David Carl) (10:30 pm, $20, The PIT Loft at 154 West 29th Street)

NYC Top Comedy Choices for Monday 2/29/16

February 29, 2016

If you’re funny and a talented writer, consider submitting a short story to my fiction anthology Ghosts on Drugs. I’m being flooded with submissions from fantasy/SF/horror writers, but not many comics; and this is a great opportunity to land a prestigious book credit, plus upfront pay and a share of the royalties. Full details are here.

Mark NormandOne of the very finest stand-ups in the country, who’s performed on Conan O’Brien, Comedy Central Half Hour, Inside Amy Schumer, Last Comic Standing, and VH1’s Best Week Ever, opens for Amy Schumer, and has released comedy album Still Got It, performs stand-up for close to an hour, with opener Kate Henricks…

Mark NormandAn Evening with Mark Normand (8:00 pm, $8, Brooklyn’s Union Hall at 702 Union Street; take R subway to Union Street)

More recommendations for the best in New York City comedy tonight (in chronological order, with top picks noted and shows over $10 marked with $) include:

[TOP PICK] [FREE] 7:00 pm: Rob Cantrell (Last Comic Standing, Comedy Central, HBO, VHI, FX’s Totally Biased, documentary Metaphysical Graffiti, High Times) tries out material every night through Thursday at The Creek upstairs theatre in Queens’ LIC (10-93 Jackson Avenue): Week at the Creek: Keep It Surreal with Rob Cantrell

7:00 pm ($7): “Improvisers create scenes inspired by essays written about personal experiences and show that sometimes laughter really is the best medicine” at The Magnet theatre: You Are Not Alone: An Uplifting Show About Depression

[TOP PICK] [$] 7:30 pm, 9:30 pm, and 11:30 pm ($12 plus 2-item food/drink min.): Some of the finest stand-ups in the country spread among three shows at Comedy Cellar (117 MacDougal Street, between 3rd Street & Minetta Lane): Comedy Cellar Monday

[MEGA-TOP PICK] 8:00 pm ($5; sold out of seats, but you can probably get in if you don’t mind standing): Brilliant improvisors Jon Glaser, Brian Stack, Peter Grosz, and more stumble into rehearsed theatre scenes they know nothing about played by Broadway and/or TV stars Amy Rutberg, Jennifer Grace, Cristin Milioti, Rich Sommer, and more, plus director/host Stephen Ruddy at the UCB Chelsea theatre: Gravid Water

[TOP PICK] 8:00 pm ($8): Great lineup of Neal Brennan (razor-sharp, edgy comedy veteran; HBO, Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Fallon, co-creator of Chappelle’s Show, comedy album Women and Black Dudes), Myq Kaplan (one of the quickest minds in comedy, and rapidly rising star; finalist on Last Comic Standing, semi-finalist on America’s Got Talent; David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, Jay Leno, Comedy Central Presents, comedy CDs Small, Dork, and Handsome, Vegan Mind Meld, and Meat Robot), Jordan Carlos, Martin Morrow, and Ramon Rivas II performing stand-up at Brooklyn’s Littlefield (622 Degraw Street) hosted by the wonderful Wyatt Cenac (former star correspondent for The Daily Show; writer for numerous awesome shows, including South Park; albums Comedy Person and Brooklyn): Night Train:: Neal Brennan, Myq Kaplan, and More

8:00 ($5): “Leap year means death for Betsy and Morgan. Each Leap year they have witnessed a tragic death of a loved one—we are talking Final Destination type shit. Betsy and Morgan know death follows them (family curse) on this holiday but instead of protecting themselves and their loved ones, they decide to throw one hell of a party, putting everyone they know and love at risk” at UCB East hosted by Morgan Miller & Betsy Kenney: Final Destination: The Final Leap Year Soiree

8:00 pm ($10): Two actors perform scenes from different plays—neither of them knowing what play the other is doing—while an improviser who also knows nothing beforehand tries to make coherent sense of it all. This variation of UCBT’s Gravid Water isn’t nearly as weighty—e.g., UCB uses Broadway and TV actors paired with world-class improvisors, while this typically doesn’t—so if you don’t mind standing for the sold-out-of-seats Gravid Water, go to that, which happens to be on tonight at the exact same time. Otherwise, you can see this at The PIT upstairs theatre: The Actor’s Worst Nightmare

[MEGA-TOP PICK] [FREE] 11:00 pm: Some of the finest comics in the world-who aren’t announced in advance, but it’s usually a great lineup and often an extraordinary one—at UCB Chelsea hosted by Aparna Nancherla (one of the best stand-ups in the country; writer for Late Night with Seth Meyers; Conan O’Brien, @Midnight, Last Comic Standing). Reservations go quickly, but you can probably get in if you arrive early and are okay with standing: Whiplash

NYC Top Comedy Choices for Friday 2/26/16

February 26, 2016

Top stand-up Myq Kaplan is hilarious as he reveals secrets about his past involving violins, Robin Hood, linguistics, broken goblets, master’s degrees, improv, Carnegie Hall, finding pennies, and much more in this second episode of my career interviews podcast.

BlogologuesIt’s a great night to be at Union Hall. First, a top-notch theatrical troupe that’s equally fine at compelling acting and split-second comedy uses actual material on the Web, performed verbatim, to craft laugh-out-loud scenes spearheaded by superb creators/performers Allison Goldberg & Jen Jamula: Blogologues (7:30 pm $12, Brooklyn’s Union Hall at 702 Union Street; take R subway to Union Street)…

Picture This!…and then on this unique show as stand-ups do their sets, their material is brought to visual life by animators. Tonight’s superb comics are Mike Lawrence, Mike Drucker, Joe Pera, Josh Gondelman, Giulia Rozzi, and Wendi Starling, produced by Sam Varela & Brandie Posey and hosted by Peggy O’Leary: Picture This! (9:30 pm $10, Brooklyn’s Union Hall at 702 Union Street; take R subway to Union Street)
