New York Musical Improv Festival

…and The Magnet kicks off its annual four-day New York Musical Improv Festival

Tonight’s recommendations for the best in New York City comedy (in chronological order, with top picks noted and shows over $10 marked with $) include:

[TOP PICK] 7:00 pm-12:30 am ($10 for the entire evening): The Magnet hosts its Fifth Annual Musical Improv Festival, kicking off tonight with solo musical improv at 7:00, musical improv from improv instructors at 9:00, and an improv competition at 11:00: The Fifth Annual New York Musical Improv Festival

[TOP PICK] 7:00 pm ($10 at the door or $11.34 online; cover price includes free drink; no min.) The debut of a “longform storytelling” show, providing a whopping 25 minutes per storyteller, which tonight’s stellar guests Elna Baker (genius storyteller, and bestselling author of comedic book The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance; NPR’s This American Life; writer for Glamour, Elle; for sample tales, please click here), Andy Christie (host of The Liar Show; The New York Times, NPR, Moth GrandSlam Champion), and Peter Aguero (Conan O’Brien, Moth GrandSlam Champion, WNYC’s Moth Radio Hour, The BTK Band) performing at The Tank (151 West 46th Street) hosted by Eli Reiter: Long Story Long

[TOP PICK] 7:00 pm ($11.34 online, $12 at the door): How cool is this? Mega-bestselling author R. L. Stine (Goosebumps) is interviewed by Dave Herman, and then reads passages from his books—as springboards for improvised scenes from a small mob of comics. The awesomeness happens at The PIT upstairs theatre: Inside the Mind of R. L. Stine

[TOP PICK] 7:30 pm & 9:00 pm ($5): The first half of this industry showcase, yesterday at UCB Chelsea, provided brilliant comedic performances from Chris Gethard, Sasheer Zamata, Natasha Rothwell, Neil Casey & Will Hines, John Murray & Leslie Meisel & Connor Ratliff, Jordan Klepper & Russ Armstrong, and more. On this second half of the showcase, UCB sketch, stand-up, and improv comics such as Dan Hodapp, Riley Soloner, Don Fanelli, Veronica Osorio, and Tim Dunn perform at UCB East. Please note this is one show that’s being performed twice, back to back, for the sake of filming; the best bits of both will later be edited into one show to be used for, well, lord knows what. Come experience it live: UCBT NY Variety Hour Showcase

[TOP PICK] [$] 7:00 pm ($26; SOLD OUT): Kelly Carlin talks about life with her legendary father George Carlin for this one-woman show at the Cherry Lane Theatre (38 Commerce Street, near the #1 subway’s Christopher Street stop): A Carlin Home Companion

[TOP PICK] 8:00 pm ($5): At the UCB Chelsea theatre, Jordan Klepper (The Stepfathers, MTV’s I Just Want My Pants Back, IFC) and Russ Armstrong (30 Rock, MTV’s Failosophy) demonstrate they’re superb comedic performers in this two-man sketch show about men who fail and/or regret. I wish the guys had worked with another writer, or at least a tough editor, to make the writing uniformly stronger; but there are enough solid bits, and strong comic acting throughout, to make this worth catching: Guilty Bystanders

…and in the other half of this double-bill, Dan Black (FUSE, Death by Roo Roo, Ripley) performs a one-man show “as a student of the dude game” in The Pageantry of Man

[TOP PICK] 9:30 pm ($5): At the UCB Chelsea theatre, a musical “based on the true history of the founding of America, in which Jesus Christ embarks on a journey to help build a country that’s courageous, pious, and gun-crazy enough for his precious Constitution…as long as the evil King Barrack Hussein George III doesn’t get in the way,” written by Eric Gersen and directed by John Flynn: Seventeen Seventy-Something

…and in the other half of this double-bill, a one-man show by Arthur Meyer (writer/performer for Jimmy Fallon; David Letterman; sketch groups Pangea 3000, Fambly, Two Fun Men) that features some hilarious songs, especially the last one that’s a show-stopper homage to what rock ‘n roll is all about: Arthur Meyer: Rock and Roll

[TOP PICK] 9:30 pm ($8): Comedy troupe Private Cabin has been skewering trashy cinema since 2010 via its podcast, and tonight will make entertainingly harsh comments about horror flick Scream 3 at The PIT upstairs theatre hosted by Andrew Jupin, Stephen Sajdak, Chris Cabin, and Eric Szyszka: We Hate Movies

[TOP PICK] 9:30 pm ($5): Improvisors make up one-act plays on the spot at The PIT downstairs lounge, produced by Dan Hodapp & Micah Sherman: The Scene

11:00 pm ($5): “Ever wonder how Abraham Lincoln really made it to the White House? Whether Ryan Gosling only took up acting because of his failure at acupuncturist grief counseling? If Gloria Steinem went through a “skank phase”? Watch as indie team Free Cake and others improvise the timeline of your most beloved celebrities from Socrates to Shakira using your suggestions” at The PIT downstairs lounge: The Biopic

Gilbert Gottfried

Gilbert Gottfried headlines for one night only at Carolines...

Livia Scott

...and magical comedic chameleon Livia Scott resurrects her popular showcase for dead celebrities at Livia's Castle of Enchantment

Tonight’s recommendations for the best in New York City comedy (in chronological order, with top picks noted and shows over $10 marked with $) include:

[FREE] 6:00 pm to midnight: Six free hours of improvisation at The PIT’s Super Free Wednesday

[FREE] 6:00 pm: Open-mic stand-up providing four minutes per comic, with “15 people chosen randomly through e-mail, and five walk-ins; and a guaranteed spot to anyone who performs in character as a famous explorer” at Queens LIC’s The Creek upstairs theatre: Comedic Exploration Club of Long Island City, West

7:00 pm-12:30 am ($7 for the entire evening): Magnet house troupes Grappler, Leviathan, The Surge, Horses, Brick, Featherweight, Dunk, and Chet Watkins performing improv, followed by a free audience interactive show with Brick at 11:30 pm: The Magnet’s Megawatt

[TOP PICK] 7:30 pm ($5): Championing chaos for comedy, a team of improvisers perform: “What form? What type of show? Fuck that shit, just come and laugh.” The experiment in anarchy takes place at UCB East starring Don Fanelli, Dru Johnston, Tim Martin, Josh Patten, Kate Riley, and Terry Withers: Fuck That Shit

[TOP PICK] [$] 7:30 pm ($24.50 & 2-drink min.)  A unique comedy star headlining for one night only at the Carolines Comedy Club: Gilbert Gottfried

8:00 pm ($5): At this UCB Chelsea double-bill, Doug Moe is a Bad Dad will convince you that Doug Moe is actually a quite good dad, and also a skilled and highly likeable performer…but not so much an experienced writer. The production feels like a bunch of improvised bits glued together rather than a carefully planned and executed journey, providing little emotional satisfaction; and worse, not a whole bunch of laughs. Doug’s real-life experiences as a dad, and the videos of his little angel of a five-year-old daughter, offer the potential for a fine show, but cry out for more focused scripting. As for Everybody’s Dumb and Boring, I arrived late for it so will simply say that Joanna Bradley is also a talented performer, and is neither dumb nor boring; but once again, there were script problems. You may well end up a fan of both performers, though—and look forward to more developed work from them.

8:00 pm ($5—which includes a free beer!): NYC stand-ups (not yet announced this week) performing stand-up at The Creek upstairs theatre in Queens’ Long Island City for this weekly show hosted by Nick Turner & Jason Sáenz: Too Cool for School

[TOP PICK] 9:00 pm ($5): Three teams of six UCB improvisors, each a mix of students and such veterans as John Frusciante, Amey Goerlich, Kevin Hines, and John Murray, performing an annual improv tradition at UCB East—a show that’s not about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade, but something that precedes it: The Macy’s Day Before Thanksgiving Day Parade

[FREE—plus FREE BROOKLYN BEER] 9:00 pm: NYC stand-ups Rose Surnow, Mara Herron, Justy Dodge, and George Gordon performing at a new free weekly show at Brooklyn’s Sandbox Underground (257 Grand Street, near the L subway’s Bedford stop) hosted by Mike Denny, Michael Che, and Nimesh Patel, and featuring free beer: Broken Comedy

[TOP PICK] 9:30 pm ($5): A beloved show that brings dead celebrities back to life is itself resurrected tonight at UCB Chelsea, as magical comedic chameleon Livia Scott (Conan O’Brien,Law & OrderDirty Movie) hosts as JonBenet Ramsey and guest host Paul Downs pitches in as Michael Jackson. Adding to the comedic darkness will be sketch comedy from UCBT house troupe Onassis, music from phenom singer/songwriter Corn Mo, and “special surprise guests:” Livia’s Castle of Enchantment

[TOP PICK] [$] 9:30 pm ($38.25 & 2-drink min.): Stellar Australian comic who’s been a regular onOpie & Anthony and starred in his own HBO special, I Swear To God, headlining tonight through Saturday at the Carolines Comedy Club: Jim Jefferies

[FREE] 11:00 pm: Open-mic stand-up running until 1:00 am, with time divided evenly between performers (up to five minutes), at The Creek downstairs lounge in Queens’ Long Island City with host Rob Stern: Bucket ‘O Buckets

Outlook of the Poet and Gilbert Gottfried

Outlook of the Poet (above) battles The Brothers Hines tonight at Cage Match; and Gilbert Gottfried headlines for one night only at Carolines

Tonight’s recommendations for the best in New York City comedy (in chronological order, with top picks noted and shows over $10 marked with $) include:

[TOP PICK] [$] 7:30 pm ($24.50 & 2-drink min.)  A one-of-a-kind comedy star headlining at the Carolines Comedy Club: Gilbert Gottfried

[TOP PICK] 8:00 pm ($28 online using discount code TMANIA): UK-based Daniel Kitson is one of the sharpest and most respected writer/performers alive. This is a rare opportunity to spend an intimate 90 minutes with a true genius of comedy. Please note this is a sprawling, detail-packed theatrical show, not stand-up…and not for every taste. But whether you’re ultimately grabbed by the story or not, it’s worth experiencing if only for Daniel’s lightning-quick flashes of humor. For example, at the performance I attended a woman sitting in the front row had the incredible gall to start reading. Daniel sweetly responded, “Ooh, that’s a subtle yet effective form of criticism. I’m certainly not cross with you, just too nosy about what you’re reading to plow on. Look, you’re still reading. What a lack of faith you have in live entertainment.” Place your faith in Daniel, check out the review from The New York Times, and catch this show running every day except Mondays through January 30th at Brooklyn’s St. Ann’s Warehouse (38 Water Street): The Interminable Suicide of Gregory Church

[TOP PICK] 8:00 pm ($8): Wonderful comic Kurt Braunohler “relates how he destroyed a 13-year relationship in the dumbest, most complicated way possible, with bar fights, naked men, walruses, and an audition for Sasha Baron Cohen” in the one-man show The Amish Guide to Fucking

8:00 pm ($5): A two-man sketch show from very smart and somewhat nerdy comics Dan St. Germain (MTV; quick-witted rising star) and Jared Logan (Last Comic Standing, Comedy Central, co-host of Righteous Kill) about history’s most infamous rivalries; and an interesting idea that doesn’t really get pulled off from adorable comics Geoff Garlock and Emily Strachan, in the double-bill They Hated Each Other and Gettin’ Quaid

8:00 pm ($5): Veteran improvisors play with “elements of monoscene, deconstruction, and La Ronde” in Sleepover

[TOP PICK] 9:00 pm ($12): Dave Hill (one of the most original and hilariously sharp alternative comics in the country; HBO, Comedy Central, MTV, VH1, NPR, star of The King of Miami, band Diamondsnake, champion rapper; The New York Times, The Huffington Post, The Dave Hill Explosion), Chuck Nice (VH1’s Best Week Ever), Michael Somerville (Wingman), and Caroline Rhea (The Caroline Rhea Show, The Biggest Loser) performing stand-up at Comedy Below Canal

[FREE] 9:00ish pm: Typically terrific NYC stand-ups performing on this weekly show at the Kabin Bar and Lounge hosted by Chesley Calloway and comedy genius Sean Patton (red-hot rising star; killer set onJimmy Fallon, Comedy Central, VH1): Comedy as a Second Language

9:00 pm (no cover, 1-item min.): Rory Scovel (rising star; Jimmy Fallon, Comedy Central), Adrienne Iapalucci, Todd Womack, and David Smithyman performing stand-up at the Luca Lounge (222 Avenue B off 14th Street) for a show hosted & produced by recently engaged couple Sean Crespo & Carol Hartsell: Lasers in the Jungle

[TOP PICK] 9:30 pm ($5): John Mulaney (writer/performer for Saturday Night LiveConan O’Brien, Comedy Central Presents, VH1’s Best Week Ever; for John’s great bit on Weekend Update, please click here), Aasif Mandvi (correspondent for The Daily Show), and Negrin Farsad (MTV, FringeNYC) joining delightful hosts Andrea Rosen and Shonali Bhowmik for Variety SHAC

9:30 pm ($8): “An improvised spoof on the process of rehearsing and performing a play takes the audience through the table read, bits of one of the rehearsals, and the opening night performance of a production that’s never been performed before and never will be again:” The Play Format

[TOP PICK] 11:00 pm ($5): Superb improv troupes Outlook of the Poet (Gavin Speiller, Ben Rodgers, and Jon Gabrus) and The Brothers Hines (Will and Kevin) competing for audience laughs and votes at the raucous Cage Match
